Preparing Your Area
Ahead of seeding the lawn you should prepare the area properly. The area you have selected ought to be dug thoroughly and all stones taken out and big clods of earth broken down. Rake the area and compress lightly with your heels. The surface can then be scratched lightly to make furrows for the seeds.
Seeding the Lawn
There are two ways used to seed a lawn, manually and with a machine. To seed with a machine, weigh out the amount of seed blend considered necessary for the area then put half into the machine and sow by moving up and down the area in strips. At the end of each strip, to prevent over-seeding, you could cover the ground with some plastic or shut the delivery holes in the machine. You could use canes set into the earth or cables to guide you. At this point place the rest of the seeds into the seeding machine and, working perpendicular to the original rows, finish sowing the lawn.
If you are hand seeding the lawn it is a good plan to break up the area into parts of a yard square by means of cord and canes. Work out the amount of lawn seed you require for each section, weight this out and add to a small container. Mark about how much this is so that you don’t need to repeat the weighing each time. Evenly seed the first section, scattering the seeds in each directions to make sure that they’re spread consistently. Now replenish the container to about a similar height as earlier and seed the next section. Carry on until the whole area is seeded.
Once the entire area has been seeded rake over lightly and irrigate completely.During the next seven days to fourteen days make sure that you water regularly if it doesn’t rain. The seedlings will start to sprout in this time.
When to Mow Your Newly Seeded Lawn
When the lawn seedlings are in the region of 6 cm tall you may cut the grass for the first time using a rotary lawnmower. Take care to gather lawn trimmings or make use of a rake and be careful not to disturb the young seedlings.
