If it's going to be outside for a while (weeks, months, years, etc) then housepaint would be best. To get the color right, you may need a couple or three different ones. Paint the rock a base color, and then use other colors to make it look real. Rub it a bit before the other colors are dry, if you're good at blending. I even saw one spraypaint at the home improvement store that is designed to give a rock-look finish. It sprays in more than one color at once, and does not cover evenly. It looks really good. If it's going to be an outdoor rock, paint it with housepaint first, let it dry well, and then use the rock-look spray. If you’re needing it for a stage prop, spraypaint would work fine.
