How to seal and paint a paper mache fake rock?

I’ve read about all kinds of shellacs and waxes…
Well, I painted a bowl that I had made with indoor semi-gloss paint one year, and when I used it for gardening, it was fine.
Would exterior semi-gloss work?
Thanks!

What do you want to use the rock for?
Garden decor? Yes, exterior semi-gloss is what you want.

If you’re needing it for a stage prop, spraypaint would work fine. If it’s going to be outside for a while (weeks, months, years, etc) then housepaint would be best.

To get the color right, you may need a couple or three different ones. Paint the rock a base color, and then use other colors to make it look real. Rub it a bit before the other colors are dry, if you’re good at blending. I even saw one spraypaint at the home improvement store that is designed to give a rock-look finish. It sprays in more than one color at once, and does not cover evenly. It looks really good. If it’s going to be an outdoor rock, paint it with housepaint first, let it dry well, and then use the rock-look spray.

i use regular acrylic paint for outdoor decor. i seal the object with mod-podge first , then paint it, then use another coat of mod-modge to seal it. its very durable for outside conditions and holds up for years
