Hey Gardening Girl – Did You Consider The Flower Bulbs?

After a long winter there is nothing more lovely than a spring garden with decorative garden decor (glass gazing balls are a great addition). That spring bloom can be much more beautiful by following this easy tip.

First things first…in the fall, plant your bulbs along with some ground phlox. You
should also put some bulb fertilizer in the hole as you plant the bulbs-and watch to
the instructions on depth for planting. It is also a good idea to plant the bulbs in groups of 5 or 10
interspersed in such a way that other plants will hide their foliage as the bulbs start to
wither. When they are just planted willy nilly here and there they tend to make a nice
home seem cheap
.

In the spring after your daffodils and tulips have all bloomed it is important to not cut
back the foliage
. It may look unsightly, but cutting it away will hinder your bulbs from
blooming next year. If you will take the patience to let it yellow, it usually does pull out or cut off more easily
enough. Truthfully, if you cann’t yank it from the soil then it is pointless to try and cut
down and taken out. These left over leaves are generating food for next year’s blooms. All you have to do is
forget about them until they are totally wilted.

It is also a good idea to put down some bulb fertilizer in the fall and spring over the areas where you have them planted. Doing this usually keeps your bulbs joyous from year to year. Daffodils are a good bulb choice as deer and squirrels seem fairly uninterested in them and
they slowly multiply year after year.

If you haven’t already noticed also, tulips can be a let-down!

You will find that in a couple seasons your bulbs tend cease blooming. Plus, the varmits will steal the bulbs or the deer eat them – they simply stop appearing.

Yes, grape hyacinth and also scilla are both know to be beautiful tiny purplish flower bulbs, but they can spread to the
point of becoming a nuisance in your landscape…and, as you can probably guess, you should want to keep this in your plans if bringing them in. Be sure to have some recycled glass gazing balls and other decorative garden decor too!

Rule of thumb number one is to start the spring garden in the fall…just another reason why planning ahead is a big part of gardening.
