You’ve been cooking Italian cuisine for years, or just getting started, and the cupboard contains several plastic containers of purchased dried Italian herbs, imagine enhancing the flavors of your Italian culinary creations with fresh herbs grown and harvested out of your very own garden! Using the freshest ingredients will always enhance the taste of food and even more so if the herbs are cultivated by your own hands.
Italian herb garden plants may be purchased in a kit and will usually contain the basic “Italian Trio” herbs of oregano, basil and chives. Oregano (origanum vulgare) is commonly used in pizza sauces. The pungent smell and pretty little pink and purple flowers will add color and a delightful aroma to the kitchen area. Basil (ocimum basilicum) pairs well with tomato sauces or can be used fresh snipped into salads. There are several varieties of the basil plant with the sweet basil variety most commonly used in Italian cuisine. Chives (allium schoenoprasum) are a member of the onion family with a milder flavor then the onion bulbs. The bright green color of the chive herb plant lends a visual dimension to any culinary application. Many other herbs are used in Italian cuisine. Some of the more common herb plants include garlic, Italian parsley and thyme herbs.
An Italian Herb Garden Kit would be the easiest and simplest method to begin cultivation of the plants; however an Italian herb garden would also thrive in hanging baskets or pots and containers placed in the landscape or on a deck, handy for harvesting when needed. Planted in an outdoor space, the Italian herb garden would enhance the landscape and garden space by adding color and aroma. Take a stroll through the outdoor Italian herb garden and it will feel and smell like a visit to Italy!
