Herbs. Parsley is useful, chives are pretty and keep coming back, a thyme?
I like Roxy's lavender hedge if this isn't too tall for your purpose - go for one of the low-growing varieties since it has a Northerly aspect.

You could try a lavender hedge - not only is it beautiful, it also smells delicious when you brush against it, and it keeps away pests who detest the smell of it! Then when they growing season's over, you can harvest the lavender, dry it and make lavender bags to keep your clothes smelling sweet and keep the moths away. You could also try cooking with it! Lavender doesn't grow out of control, as long as you cut it back, the plants are fairly cheap to buy, and will reward you in many different ways. Happy gardening.

Edit:

Just checked back and noted your lavender use elsewhere. How about a low bay hedge (also has its culinary purposes, is evergreen, and again, will keep certain pests away).

Personally, i prefer the authentic and nice look of the bricks. I have seen the steel and it just doesn't look as good to me. The upkeep isn't bad at all. We never have to move them or adjust them at all. We have had ours for nearly three years surrounding our flower bed around our house. Hope this helped.
