you could have simply covered the area with old carpet,plastic,cardboard and killed of any further growth…it’s rediculously simple

If you find ANY aspect of gardening rediculously simple you are either a lot luckier or a lot cleverer than me . i have used the methods you describe to break in old permanent pasture. Cardboard will either rot or blow away before its done the job , and nettles , docks and cocksfoot grew thro the carpet. almost as tho it wasnt there . To get it to work i had to weigh down black plastic with old carpet . also i then had to wait a whole year before i could grow a crop .

just roundup the grass! It breaks down pretty fast (quick enough before leeching into groundwater) and is safe if properly used.
Then, (if no tiller is available) garden fork/spade up the sod. Backbreaking work, but it works!
