Hydroponics is defined as a form for cultivating plants and gardening. Even after several years the pollutants that are found in soil in which we are exposed do not go away. This fact, along with others, has prompted researchers to look for ways to minimize the exposure of the plant to mediums that may carry factors that can add or contribute to a person ill health. In hydroponics soil is not the medium used for planting plants.
Soil Is Not Important
In hydroponic gardening, researchers have found out that soil is actually just a reservoir where nutrients are stored for the plant’s consumption. The reservoir is just where the plant’s food is stored. Therefore if the plant can get the nutrients it needs some other way, the reservoir is not essential. Hydroponics research has found out that the nutrients in the soil dissolve when they come in contact with water, thus making it easier for the plants to absorb. With hydroponics there is no need for soil for some plants.
As long as plants that are usually found in soil, terrestrial plants, have access to the proper kinds of nutrients that are essential to their growth they can actually survive even when they are soilless. Hydroponics provide some medium that may promote a healthier life. These mediums are mineral wool, perlite and gravel. These are just there to provide the roots something to hold on to for stability.
the important factor is that in hydroponics the nutritional need of the plant is filled by using the mineral solution. Almost all plants can grow without soil as long as the nutrient based solution is present. A specially formulated solution is given in doses to the growing plant to meet the nutirional needs and help it thrive. Not all plants can tolerate their roots being exposed to water all the time so some nutritional solutions
are given at certain intervals through hydroponics.
Hydroponics has certain advantages such as cultivation in a clean environment with the fuss and mess of soil. The absence of many soil borne diseases that target plants and produce is another advantage of hydroponics. For places that are barren such as the desert that have difficulty in cultivating plants hydroponics provides a solution. To grow most plants it is not necessary to plant them in soil therefore, greenhouses can grow better crops without soil because the nutrients needed are provided directly to the plants.
